My current WIP is an action sci-fi story with a lot of superhero stuff. The MC is very powerful, but has a lot of serious flaws. Conveying power in a way not resorting to overt exposition or clichéd tropes requires finesse and subtlety and is not natural, at least for myself. In this post, we’ll explore several techniques for subtly implying a character’s dominance in an action-packed narrative.
Instead of explicitly stating a character’s abilities or strengths, demonstrate them through actions and interactions within the story. Show the character effortlessly overcoming challenges, outmaneuvering opponents, or executing complex maneuvers with ease. Let their actions speak for themselves, leaving readers in awe of their capabilities.
Utilize dialogue and subtext to hint at a character’s power without overtly stating it. Engage in conversations where other characters express admiration, respect, or even fear towards the powerful character. Through subtle remarks, gestures, and reactions, convey the impression that the character commands authority and respect from those around them.
Pay attention to the physical description and presence of the character. Describe their posture, demeanor, and the way they carry themselves with confidence and assurance. Use vivid imagery to portray their imposing stature, intense gaze, or aura of command, leaving readers with no doubt about their strength and dominance.
Showcase the character’s strategic thinking and planning skills in action sequences. Illustrate how they anticipate their opponent’s moves, exploit weaknesses, and devise clever tactics to gain the upper hand. By demonstrating their ability to outsmart and outmaneuver adversaries, you subtly imply their superior intellect and foresight.
